Estudiante de Dietetica (ED)

The Estudiante de Diet茅tica, also known as the ED program, was developed to train undergraduate dietetic students to better serve the Hispanic/Latino community. The Department of Nutrition and Food Science received a three-year grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) that expanded the dietetic curriculum, developed students' Spanish-language skills, and focused on Latino culture as well as food and health issues.

  1. Create and evaluate a novel curricular approach to training dietetic students, which produces dietetic students who are better able to serve the Hispanic community.
  2. To produce dietetic students who are more culturally competent and comfortable working with the Hispanic community.
  3. To develop three dietetic training modules focused on major nutrition issues affecting the Hispanic population and integrate and evaluate them within the curriculum.
  4. To increase recruitment and retention of Hispanic students into the dietetic major.

The dietetic internship/Supervised Practice Experience (SPE) is a post-baccalaureate supervised practice program that occurs independently or coordinated with a graduate degree program. An ACEND-accredited SPE is typically a full-time and non-paid commitment for the duration of six to twelve months. Upon completion of an SPE, students are eligible to take the National Registration Examination for Dietitians administered by the Commission on Dietetic Registration.

The selection process for SPE applicants is very competitive, but CPP graduates have fared well against their peers and more options exist than ever before. Students should plan to build an effective career portfolio during their undergraduate experience. To meet the minimum eligibility requirements for a DI, individuals must complete the ACEND-accredited DPD coursework and earn their bachelor's degree*.

*There are some GP programs that offer the DPD at the graduate level, so please explore ACEND’s website for these options.

In addition, strong applicants usually have a grade point average at or above 3.0 (but not necessarily); paid and volunteer work experiences in dietetics and related fields; demonstrated effective leadership, professional, and communication skills; shown commitment to community service and the practice of dietetics; and received strong recommendations from faculty and employers. For most CP and SPE programs, the student must have met the minimum requirements and obtained a Verification Statement by the time the SPE begins.

There are two applications each year through DICAS. The Fall application timeline is for applications due between Summer and Nov. 1 and for Spring, applications are due after Nov. 1 but by March 1. These due dates may not correspond to a start date (for example, a Fall program application does NOT mean the program starts before August of the following year. You’ll need to find program-specific information on each respective program website.

Applying for programs that complement your qualifications and skills will increase your chances of being accepted to an SPE. DPD students are encouraged to 最新糖心Vlog for SPE and graduate programs anywhere in the nation. They are advised to find an SPE and graduate program that fits their financial, academic, and geographic needs.

To better assist students, the DPD program at 最新糖心Vlog provides information workshops each fall and weekly office hours with the DPD Director to discuss applications, classes, and anything career-related for the Dietetics students.

The department also offers a one-unit course every spring (NTR 4310 – Health Science and Nutrition Graduate Program Exploration and Preparation) to provide students with the information needed to successfully pursue graduate degree programs, SPE’s, the DTR certification, and job opportunities.

Please use the various resources, including those posted to the Dietetics Canvas page for current students, to advance your potential as a post-baccalaureate candidate. You can always reach the DPD Director at dpd@cpp.edu
