Juneteenth: The Significance of Food
Collectively, these foods represent far more than recipes. They tell stories of survival, migration, ingenuity, resistance, family, cultural preservation, and love. They carry the memory of ancestors who transformed limited resources into nourishment for both body and spirit and who used food as a way to sustain community, dignity, celebration, and hope across generations.
“Food plays such a powerful role in community and our ability to come together and share stories. This year, we wanted to capture our community’s lineage through food. The intentionality of CPP Enterprises in recognizing that we need to do this right and doing justice by people’s stories and ingredients shows progress and gives me hope.”
–Dr. Jonathan Grady
“Through this process, I learned that food is so personal. I felt vulnerable in ways that I didn’t expect. For example, just trying to translate measurement wasn’t easy because we don’t usually measure, we’ll just season it to taste.”
–La’Keisha Beard
“Enterprises gave serious care to the family piece. It’s clear they’re not cooking just anything.”
–Kenneth Partner
“Food can be emotional when your culture is built around it. What your ancestors had access to can become the DNA of your family. Food can just be functional in the U.S. but in many cultures and countries you might sit around the table for three to four hours. It’s been really special to be part of this.”
–Dr. Karen Harris Tyrrell
“It has been an honor to bring this ‘family meal’ to life … to show that food is not just transactional, it’s connected to family, heritage and tradition.”
-Thomas Sekayan
“I hope we did these recipes proud. We did our best to handle them with care. Food can evoke childhood memories, which made it a little intimidating. That little dash of this or that from Grandma can really matter.”
–Dylan Arriaza, Lead Chef
