When people hear the term "sustainability," they often think of recycling, water conservation, and energy usage. It is indeed all of those things, and so much more. There are elements of social equity, ethical economics, and resource management as well. "We," as a university, seek to become leaders in sustainability and engage the 最新糖心Vlog community to look at the interconnectedness of what we do and how it fits into the global challenges that exist.
At the Office of Sustainability, our goal is to educate and help students, faculty and staff embrace sustainability in their daily lives while integrating sustainable practices into the university's planning and policies, academics, operations, student activities and community engagement.
We work collaboratively with a variety of campus departments and divisions to steer sustainability-specific initiatives. Previously housed under Strategic Initiatives for Administrative Affairs, we are now part of Facilities Planning & Management, where we are also supporting university efforts to implement the university's Strategic Plan that states "as global citizens, our individual and collective actions reflect our commitment to one another, society, and the environment."
Campus Goals

Residence Halls and Centerpointe Dining Earn LEED Gold
Centerpointe Dining Commons and the Secoya and Sicomoro residence halls have earned LEED Gold Certification from the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC). (Read the PolyCentric story for details.)

Plant-Based Nutrition Minor Gets Funding
The Huntley College of Agriculture will get a jumpstart on a new minor focusing on plant-based food and nutrition, thanks to a $51,000 gift from Bipin Shah and his wife, Rekha. CPP Gets Buzz as Bee Campus

Green Initiative Fund
The Green Initiative Fund (TGIF) is a student-led program that supports sustainability projects on campus. It provides financial resources for initiatives that advance environmental stewardship, promote renewable energy, reduce waste, conserve resources, and foster a culture of sustainability among the student body. Funded through student fees, TGIF empowers students to take direct action on climate change, environmental justice, and sustainable development goals. Use the to join.
Campus as a Living Lab
The Campus as a Living Lab (CALL) is a grant program whereby faculty members develop courses in which students can help solve real-world sustainability problems and address the planet’s environmental challenges. Sustainable Collaboration
The Student Sustainability Coalition collaborates with the Office of Sustainability and other sustainability-related clubs/organizations in assisting and creating programming that provides unity among the affiliated student organizations in order to approach sustainability at 最新糖心Vlog with a holistic perspective. The Student Sustainability Coalition serves as a multidisciplinary hub for clubs and organizations that address sustainability, so that general body members become aware of all the different opportunities to get involved with sustainability on campus.
Interactive Experiences
The College of Science offers interactive educational experiences unlike any other. Come learn about tropical rainforests, indigenous plants, and ancient habitats. The various BioTrek learning centers emphasize the need to share knowledge, values and behaviors that support biological sustainability on a finite Earth.
Urban Forest
Trees offer a wide range of benefits for the environment, human health, and communities. They improve air quality by absorbing pollutants and releasing oxygen, and help mitigate climate change by storing carbon. Trees also reduce urban heat through shading and cooling the atmosphere, while their roots prevent soil erosion and reduce the risk of flooding. Farm to Fork
Chefs on faculty work directly with agriculture students to plan each crop of the one-acre culinary garden. The garden provides students with farm-to-fork lessons in seasonal menu planning and preparation.
Recycling Bins
The campus single-stream recycling program allows acceptable material to be placed into a single container. Any recycling receptacle on campus accepts paper, cardboard, beverage containers, newspaper, pizza boxes, shredded paper, chip bags, magazines, etc. Visit the link below to learn more, including what should not be put into a recycling bin.
Lab Certification Program
The Bronco Green Labs program was developed to evaluate and promote sustainable behavior and efficiency within campus laboratories. The program provides resources and guidance in areas of water conservation, waste reduction, sustainable purchasing, and energy efficiency. To participate, please contact sustainability@cpp.edu.
LEED Certification

Building design and construction takes a broad spectrum of green building strategies into account. To accomplish this, the University uses the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Certification System to track opportunities in transportation, site development, water efficiency, energy efficiency, waste reduction, materials and resources, and indoor environmental quality.

Climate Change
The Summer Fellowship pilot program was recently launched by . The Office of Sustainability was fortunate to have two fellows join us for the summer thanks to a grant provided by Bay Area Community Resources and LA Works. The overall goal of the Climate Action Corps is to address climate change, create more equitable communities, and assist the fellows in professional development. Due to the pandemic, our fellows worked remotely on the projects highlighted below.
Water Conservation
At CPP, there are several bioswales around campus which are landscape features designed to manage stormwater runoff and improve water quality. They are constructed to mimic natural processes by capturing, filtering, and infiltrating rainwater into the ground rather than allowing it to flow directly into storm drains or waterways. A bioswale typically consists of a shallow, vegetated channel or depression with gently sloping sides. It is designed to slow down and retain stormwater, allowing it to infiltrate into the soil while filtering out pollutants and sediments. The vegetation within the bioswale helps absorb water, enhance filtration, and promote evapotranspiration.
Energy and Utility Services
The Energy Services unit works diligently to procure the best value for energy and water supplies for the campus. This unit also identifies energy efficiency projects and rebate programs that will help augment the repair and replacement of worn-out mechanical, controls and lighting systems on campus, as well as minimize utility expenses.
